To People Who Want To Get Organized But Can’t Get Started

“It’s good to leave your room super-messy when you’re away. Whoever tries to break into your room will thought it has already been ransacked.” ― Douglas Adams

That may be a funny quote, but picture yourself coming home to that mess after spending a fabulous week in an uncluttered hotel at a beautiful resort. How would that make you feel? Probably like turning around and going back on vacation. Now, picture yourself coming home to a beautifully organized space, where all of the things you love and make you happy are displayed in a cohesive, calming manner around your home. How does   that make you feel? If you are living in a home full of clutter, it can be overwhelming and you may not know where to start. This is very common in most people, and especially for all of our clients. The best way to get started is to first visualize and get clear on what you want your space to look and feel like. Do you want it to be a fun home, full of colour, where you can entertain all of your friends and family? Do you want it to be a quiet, peaceful, and relaxing home, where you can kick back and enjoy a movie with a friend or loved one? Write down what you want your home to represent for you. Next, clear a space in one room. Move everything out. Once you have a space cleared start moving pieces and things back into that room.   Divide the room into 3 spaces, which will be 2 categories. Grab the first thing you see in your home, and ask yourself “Do I love this item? Have I used this item in the last year? Will this item contribute and create the kind of space I want to create? If the answer is no to all 3 of these questions, put it in the empty room. One side of the room is for items to sell, the other side of the room is for items to donate. If you answered Yes to any of those questions, put that item in the room it is meant to go in. If it was a lamp for the office, put it in the office on the floor and go to the next item. Repeat these steps until you have gone through your whole house. Once you have everything in the room find a place for it that works. If you have too many of the same item and no place to put it, pick the one you like the best, and if it doesn’t have any sentimental value to you, sell it or donate it. Don’t think that you may need it later. If you are still feeling overwhelmed and need someone to give you an objective opinion, we are here to help. We can create a space that makes you feel glad you came home after that fabulous vacation.
